IMATIS Emergency Department
Data from Data from other doctors, specialists, ambulance, hospitals and practitioners needs to be sorted, and information about the individual patient must be displayed safely and quickly.
The purpose is to discover a way for doctors and nurses to get the fastest and best possible overview of all the relevant information that arises along a patient's pathway through the hospital Emergency Department.
Strategic Goals for the Solution
•Increasing Patient Safety and Satisfaction
•Improving the efficiency of the patient flow (thereby reducing the number of incidents)
•Controlling the bottlenecks
Hospital Emergency Department Solutions
The Goals for the Acute Department
•To treat the most critical patients first
•The recourses in the Emergency Department are used as effective as possible
•Reducing the average patient stay in the Emergency Department
•Optimizing the patient flow (into the Hospital and internally in the Hospital)
•Providing the nurses and doctors with real-time information of Department resources
•Giving access to patient information at any device, in any location - just a few touches away
•Giving more attention to the patients (measured result is nurses spend more than 22 % of their time with the patients)
Tactical Goals for the Solution
•Real-time overview of the situation in the ambulance, helicopter and other patient transportation modes on the way to the hospital
•Real-time overview of the situation in the Emergency Department, improving the overview of patients and triage situation
•Ambulance Health Record (patient overview, ECG and other monitoring systems)
•Improving the working environment, reducing the stress levels for the nurses and doctors, as well as the noise, giving increased control of the situation
•Education and knowledge transfer between the employees
•Overview of available beds in the hospital for fast transfer from the Emergency Department – patient flow
•Collaboration between caregivers, transportation, service personnel and other wards
Operational Goals for the Solution
•Intuitive for the users
•High uptime, fast responses when user activated functionality
•Data filter sets makes it easy to focus on the important elements, and provides instant notification when new data becomes available (lab results etc.)
•Flexibility, so the user can customize the solutions to cover local needs
•A back-up system enables the system to be used in failure situations
•Supports touch for easy access on the move (for instance in the ambulance)
•Integration of information from the ambulance, helicopter and 911
Integrated work flow
•By closely integrating the Emergency Whiteboard with the Bed Management solution, a more effective intra-hospital patient flow is achieved.
•The pre-hospital services (911, AMK) can use a real-time Pre Hospital Whiteboard, showing online status of the patient in the ambulance or helicopter. The iPhone to the right shows an example of an information gathering device used in the ambulance. The electronic Pre Hospital Whiteboard displays the medical status of all incoming patients. The Pre Hospital Whiteboard shares data, in real-time, between the Emergency Department Whiteboard, the Pre Hospital Whiteboard (at the AMK/911) and the mobile smart phone used by the healthcare workers. There is also a map with real-time status of the location of the ambulance, reading the GPS coordinates from the iPhone.
Smart Phone integration (iPhone)
Using a combination of the highly customizable whiteboard filters, the unique whiteboard barcode and a mobile smart device enables the doctors and nurses to make real-time, two-way communication work lists on their mobile devices. The same information is available to both devices (whiteboard and phone), and the doctor can update patient information from any location, simply by using his fingertip on the smart phone. There are no limitations on the number of "apps" that may be installed on the mobile device. It is for example possible to set up one "app" for each filter. Patient confidentiality is protected by mechanisms only allowing a user to transfer data or patients that are assigned to them. The solution uses the PIN code concept, also used by the banking industry, and approved by the health authorities.
Emergency and Acute Whiteboard
The touch-based electronic whiteboards should be placed in strategic locations to display customized information to suite the local needs. The monitors can be accessed from personal computers, large wall-mounted touch-sensitive monitors and mobile wireless devices. Updates from nurse call, laboratory, x-ray, ECG etc. is made in real time, on all devices. Teams and assignments can easily be managed by swiping a fingertip across the screen. Families can be updated with the patient status on the fly, and the number of calls made to other departments can be significantly reduced by using the whiteboard and patient flow solutions. Response time for data from integrated systems is instant, which helps the caregivers effectively spending more of their time with the patients, providing care.
